 i've seen this before. the cause was that root didn't have permissions to
 write to the directory where i'd unpacked and built pidgin. are you on a
 network filesystem or something similar that requires different
 authentication, like kerberos or ldap? if so, try unpacking and building
 pidgin in a directory on the local machine, like /tmp.
