 Step-by-step, with correct formatting:
  1. Close all chat and IM windows
  2. Set Preferences - Tabs - Placement to "... vertical"
  3. Open a chat or IM window
  4. Set Preferences - Tabs - Placement to normal
 ("Top"/"Bottom"/"Left"/"Right")
  5. Tab label is still vertical
  6. Open another tab
  7. Tab labels are horizontal now
  8. Close the background tab
  9. Labels are vertical again
