 I showed this ticket to a very intelligent friend and fellow linux
 programmer. His responses:

 conversation-->more-->direct im
 (23:01:21) John: I see. I would have expected it to be in the conversation
 window...

 connect or ask you if you'd like to direct connect, like on the official
 aim client

 are not directly connected instead of erring after you try to send it.
