 I think what is happening here is that the tab switching hotkeys don't
 work when the conversation backlog pane has focus.  I don't know if this
 is an accident or by design, but it isn't Windows-specific.

 If the entry pane (or the tab) is focused, then it seems to work just
 fine.

 It is also odd that opening a new window only occasionally gives focus to
 the backlog pane.
