 There is an inconsistant display finch's buddylist, and its tooltip for
 buddy names / alises containing a <* where * could be any non-whitespace
 character.

 plaintext
 {{{
 blist:   -><- | some guy
 tooltip: ->
 }}}
 alternatively when aliased using html for the gt/lt it displays
 {{{
 blist:   -><- | some guy
 tooltip: -><- | some guy
 }}}

 In the protocol that I have observed this in (MSN) the plaintext version
 shown by the buddylist is the correct display method.
