 Unfortunately just checking the return value of purple_proxy_connect()
 will not tell you whether the connection succeeded; From
 libpurple/proxy.h:

  *                   established.  If the connection failed then
  *                   fd will be -1 and error message will be set
  *                   to something descriptive (hopefully).
