Comment:

 I played around with my various security software and my firewall. No
 results. I'm going to re-try installation of Pidgin. Maybe that'll help.
 Otherwise, I'll be testing with other 3rd party programs, like Gaim for
 instance. Maybe I can isolate a cause. I even tried a modem reset; that
 didn't help anything.
