 I have the same problem under Suse 10.2 Gnome 2.16.3.

 I can see the new emails on gmail server after I start Pidgin.
 Unfortunately if Pidgin works and I get new mail on gmail I receive no
 information from Pidgin about it. After restart Pidgin I get this
 information.
