 iso-8859-1 already contains german umlauts - and it doesn't work. I also
 changed to "UTF-8" and "UTF8" (actually I have no idea if that would work
 under windows xp), but it didn't change anything.

 The debug-window shows this message:
 Gtk: gtk_text_buffer_emit_insert: assertion `g_utf8_validate (text, len,
 NULL)' failed
