 I experience exactly the same problem, and I have been experiencing this
 problem at least since the first gaim 2.0.0 beta (before it became
 pidgin).  Prior to that, file transfers worked fine, and I have not
 changed my build environment between the time it worked and the time it
 started crashing.

 Environment is Linux kernel 2.6.* (I have upgraded a few times in the past
 year) and gnome 2.16 (recently upgraded to 2.18) all built from source
 using gcc 3.4.6.

 Configure flags are:
 --prefix=/usr --disable-nls

 Compile flags are always -O2

 Anything else you need to know?  What a relief to hear the error occurs
 with someone else and not just me!
