 I am also having this problem.

 The Status/Idle settings are: for Auto-reply, "When both away and idle"
 (changing this to "When away" seemed to make no difference).

 My status is "Working hard", a custom message which is set to Type "Away"
 and has the message "Working on projects. I will not respond unless your
 message is urgent."

 How can I get this to work?
