 At least in the official AIM client, there are large and small smilies. In
 pidgin, this option is not available. Not quite sure whether this is more
 server or client based, but one of my buddies that I know always sends
 smaller smilies (smaller text size), I always receive as the default size
 pidgin smiley.
 From original gaim bug report titled "AIM smilies are not sizable",

   In AIM, you can make the smilies bigger and smaller.[[BR]]
   In gaim, you can't
