Comment:

 This involves collecting a list of valid characters for each protocol and
 adding API to return them. That, at a minimum, would require a minor
 version push, and a lot of work (that we'd probably screw up and keep
 people from entering their valid screennames).

 It sounds like for the purposes of this bug, merely setting this property:

 http://developer.gnome.org/doc/API/2.0/gtk/GtkEntry.html#GtkEntry
 --truncate-multiline

 will fix the perceived problem. I've made this change. If you think it's
 insufficient, reopen this ticket.
