 You are most likely correct.

 I poked around a little and found the .purple/blist.xml file, containing
 the two
 IDENTICAL entries.  I deleted one by hand (with Pidgin not running) and
 after
 restarting only one entry is displayed.

 Does this workaround belong in the release notes?
