 Ah, yes it looks like it is the environment.

 These six lines are repeated lots of times in the debug window when a
 friend sent me a message:

  (12:05:50) purple_mkstemp: Couldn't make
 "/cygdrive/c/DOCUME~1/elof/LOKALA~1/Temp\purpleEPPOZT", error: 2

  (12:05:50) msn: Error opening temp passport file: No such file or
 directory

  (12:05:50) msn: unqueueing command.

  (12:05:50) msn: queueing command.

  (12:05:50) msn: C: NS 000: URL 746 INBOX

 Problem solved by setting Windows style PATH (no cygwin cygdrive) and
 unsetting TMP and TEMP.

 Seems to be working now.
