 I built a debug version of pidgin to be able to see more. I'm not sure if
 this will help, but doesn't look like pidgin is communicating with
 Google's jabber server when I change the icon.  The ONLY message in the
 debug window when I change it is something like:

 (09:51:55) buddyicon: Converting buddy icon to png as /tmp/purpleC4YLZT
