 Adium (MacOS) has #2 functionality today.  I'd be happy with just that.
 Having to resize your buddy list every time someone logs in or out to make
 efficient use of limited desktop space is tiresome and Adium nicely
 resizes it for you.  Would really like to see that in Pidgin.  The other
 bits about switching to details or no-details is just a bonus, but the
 MUST HAVE is the window auto-sizing.
