 You almost surely have an old version of the libpurple library you
 installed by hand lying around and pidgin is using that instead of the
 packaged version. Go look in /usr/local for remnants of pidgin/libpurple
 and clean them up. When you install something via 'make install' you
 generally need to run 'make uninstall' to clean it up correctly. Try
 cleaning up and seeing if a new instance of pidgin has this problem, I'll
 bet it doesn't.
