 I believe that this is an issue at the distro level rather than a bug in
 Pidgin itself.  I built 2.2.1 (the version cited in the corresponding Orca
 bug at GNOME's bugzilla) from the sourceforge sources and it worked as
 expected.  The same is true for 2.2.2.
