 You were right. Your fix does solve this problem with multi-line boxes
 (the simpler text inputs always worked fine), when I moved the .gtkrc-2.0
 file from ~/.purple/ to ~/.

 Strange why ~/.purple/.gtkrc-2.0 doesn't work. It was the exact same file
 that I copied to my home directory that works now.
