 You are running a copy of pidgin that lives in /usr/local/bin the Ubuntu
 packages do not install anything there. You still have a hand
 compiled/installed version of pidgin in /usr/local remove it if you intend
 on using the Ubuntu packaged version. Then once that is done you can try
 pidgin again and post a backtrace from that if it still crashes.
