 Figured out the problem.

 I downloaded finch to use in the meantime, while Pidgin wasn't working.
 It brought with it libpurple-2.1.1-0 as a dependency.  Once libpurple was
 updated, Pidgin worked fine.

 This means (I think) that the pidgin-2.1.1-0 package did not have the
 correct dependencies listed inside it.  Hopefully someone will fix this?
