 Ah, good point. I remember now. A few versions ago, there was some setting
 that had the side effect of choosing whether buddy icons or status icons
 would be shown as window icons. I turned it off. Maybe it was the detailed
 information setting, since it does have that effect -- buddy icons used as
 window icons. (My memory is really, really bad)

 If I enable detailed information, I only get the blank icon for the window
 for offline users with no buddy icon (other offline users still show a
 buddy icon as if they were online). I get the correct (online) icon for
 online users with no buddy icon, though.

 If I disable detailed information, I get the blank icon for all offline
 users regardless of whether they have a buddy icon.
