 Not sure if this would apply in your particular situation, but it is what
 I found in my own situation.

 Do you use a password or passphrase that has a space in it?  I've found
 that while I can create an account profile in Pidgin and save the
 passphrase with spaces, I can't re enter the passphrase with spaces in an
 existing profile.  I have to delete the profile and then re create it
 again and save the passphrase when I save the profile.

 It's a real pain in the a** for security reasons, especially as I don't
 want my passwords/passphrases stored in my profiles on any portable
 devices that I use, which are easily stolen.  I would prefer to enter them
 manually whenever I log in.
