 The problem mentioned in this ticket and ticket #4980 still exists with
 Pidgin 2.5.0.
 Instead of German umlauts I receive ascii letters ("v" instead of "ö") and
 so on.

 I'm going to use the workaround mentioned in #4980 (installing Pidgin
 2.3.1 and then upgrading to 2.5.0 without upgrading GTK+), but this really
 is a PITA.
 Obviously someone on the GTK team screwed this up, but how can a bug this
 annoying not be fixed after half a year?
