Comment:
The explanation on this requires a little bit of history, so bear with me
for a moment.
In the beginning, there was plain text in Sametime. This is what Pidgin
(or at the time, Gaim) first supported.
Then there was a new Sametime client named NotesBuddy, which among its
many other features, offered rich-text chatting and embedded images. With
a little time, support for NotesBuddy's protocol extensions (secretly just
multipart MIME and a new data message type to wrap it in) made their way
into Pidgin.
Then came ST 7.5, which also offered rich-text chatting. However, ST 7.5
didn't use the same protocol extensions that NotesBuddy had created.
Instead, they went ahead and created an alternative protocol layer that
only worked with the new ST 7.5 client.
So as of right now, if you're chatting with a NotesBuddy user, or another
Pidgin user, you should be able to use rich text and embed inline images
and all of that.
As-of-yet nobody has reverse-engineered the ST 7.5 modifications.
Unfortunately, I (as the maintainer for the Meanwhile project, which is
the library Pidgin uses to communicate with a Sametime server) no longer
use Sametime on a day-to-day basis, having changed employment to a company
that prefers IRC. This means that it would fall to some other enterprising
individual to first come over to the Meanwhile library and add support for
the 7.5 protocol changes, and then come over to Pidgin and update the
protocol plugin to make use of the new library features. Until that
happens (in that order), Pidgin cannot support anything but plain-text
chat with ST 7.5 users.
If you are interested in this feature, I would recommend filing an RFC
with the Meanwhile project, as that's where the work needs to start. I'm
marking this ticket as an enhancement request.
