Comment:

 Out of curiosity what terminal emulator are you using? This may be the
 terminal emulator including a BOM, or this may be a pidgin 'issue' that
 was just fixed, please try again in the next version of pidgin and report
 back.

 pidgin could probably do a better job of not allowing invalid characters
 to be sent out over XMPP regardless of any of the above though.
