 Can this be renamed to something less egregiously American and more
 professional like 'Contact' ?

 When using Pidgin at work, the last thing I want to think about most of
 the people on my list is that they are 'buddies'.

 I do appreciate Pidgin's heritage as gaim and that AOL Instant Messenger
 uses that word, but given the multitude of other protocols and networks
 now supported, 'Buddy' now seems very inappropriate.
