 I have this problem too, with German characters (Umlauts, a ä ü ß). I
 tested this with a friend of mine who also has Pidgin installed. We are
 using our ICQ accounts. It does not work from 2.3.1 to 2.4.0, and also
 does not work from 2.4.0 to 2.4.0.
