 I am using Vista x64. My friend does too. I had originally installed the
 version of GTK+ which comes with pidgin 2.4.0 (I believe 2.2.18a) which
 spawned the error. I have since reverted to GTK+ 2.12.1b which seems to be
 working.

 By the way, we both set the encoding to UTF-8 while still having the new
 GTK+ installed, and it did not work either, although testing with another
 client I verified that Pidgin was indeed sending UTF-8.
