Comment:

 Can you run 'telnet login.oscar.aol.com 5190' from a command prompt window
 as well as 'telnet messenger.hotmail.com 1863' from a command prompt
 window and report back on what happens (whether the connection appears to
 work successfully or whether it hangs for a while and then gives you an
 error)? If those fail then the problem is your internet connection (likely
 some firewall software or something).
