 FWIW, this also happens in 2.4 for ICQ/AIM (on WinPidgin).  I tried:

 1) A PNG image with transparent background at 48 x 45 pixels at 3 kb

 2) A GIF image with transparent background at 48 x 45 pixels at 2 kb

 with the same black background result.
