Comment:

 I tried both ways of putting it in - with and without the @aol.com

 If I try to add e.g. ab.cde at aol.com, Pidgin reports "Invalid Screen Name",

 If I try to add it as ab.cde using AIM, I am told that "Screen names must
 be a valid email address, or start with a letter and contain only letters
 numbers and spaces, or contain only numbers"

 I haven't tried with the official AIM client, as I wouldn't touch it with
 a bargepole :-)  But Trillian (3.1 basic and older versions) accepts it
 and connects fine (if that helps :-)
