 It sounds like either AOL used to let account holders have screen names
 with periods in them, or used to let people register for email addresses
 with periods in them.  Crazy.  I changed Pidgin to allow periods in the
 screen name everywhere, so this should be fixed in 2.4.1.  Sorry about
 that.
