Comment:

 I don't know what the problem is here, but it is assuredly not a Pidgin
 bug.  That error is issued by the server.

 Bad username probably means that the username you have entered in account
 preferences (under the Advanced tab) includes unacceptable characters.
 Make sure it contains only alphanumeric characters, and you should be
 fine.
