 I, too, wish for this subgrouping ability.

 I have a group for friends I've met in High School, and a group for those
 I've met in college.  I also have a group for those I've met through
 college friends, and ones for people in specific student organizations in
 college - all of those should be a subgroup of my college one.

 Trillian has supported subgroups for years.  Among *everyone* I know, it
 is the only client besides Pidgin that is in use.
