 It's actually quite easy to revert to the old behaviour in the source;
 just replace gtkconv.c with a copy from an older version of pidgin (I used
 2.3.1) and then recompile.

 I've put patches and Debian binaries [http://leapster.org/patches/pidgin/
 here] if anyone wants them.
