 I am indeed using a Windows client.
 So, as you say, this may not be a Pidgin bug but rather an exposure of
 pre-existing server misconfiguration.
 That may well be true...  but, though unlikely, it might be an obscure
 pidgin or cyrus bug...   how do we confirm the root cause / learn more
 about the nature of the misconfiguration?
 Would it help you to have an account on the misconfigured server so that
 you can step through the cyrus auth calls?  I could also disable TLS and
 sniff some packets to see what's being put on the wire...   (can't be
 bothered with SSL sniffing)
