 Well I went ahead and tried Pidgin 2.4.0 and 'almost' the same thing...
 All the icons are showing up but little of the 'friends' information is
 showing on the main window *hmmmm*

 I've attached updated screencaps AND dumped EVERYTHING from the build from
 configure to make to make install-strip!  So there shouldn't be any doubts
 as to whether I 'installed it' to the correction location. One other
 thing, the error/problem is IDENTICAL when compiled with BOTH GCC AND CCC
 [Compaq C]
