 I experienced the following error as mentioned by emptyspiral:
 Received invalid data on connection with server.

 In my case it was caused by the firewall in a beta version of Kaspersky
 Internet Security (KIS v8.0.0.295).

 When the (beta) firewall software is disabled Pidgin connects OK. :)
