Comment (by amishmm):

 On Linux it shudnt be tough doing it with cronjob OR manually using
 find command with iname/regex (eg *.txt), mtime and exec options with
 rm/mv command.

 Or plugin can be made which executes that command on Pidgin startup based
 on user preferences (no of days, move/archive or remove/delete etc)
