Comment (by fishman123):

 An additional (unpleasant) side effect.  When the account goes into a
 disabled state, the application icon in the task bar still shows as
 "green".  There's no indication that there's a connection problem.  I'm
 guessing that once the account is "disabled", it's no longer considered as
 an error condition - so the icon stays green.
