 I certainly understand that you'd not want to implement a myriad of buddy
 list options and variations.

 However, if an official client (Yahoo immediately comes to mind)
 implements it, I can't see why the feature of "show no groups" is not at
 least considered (maybe even as a SOC project).

 My "argument" for having this feature goes beyond "since Yahoo has it, so
 should Pidgin".

 On my buddy list right now (at work) I have 8 groups visible, with 19
 buddies between them.  With the groups visible (and showing buddy
 details), a lot of screen real estate is taken up by the groups.  When at
 home (after hours) I'll have less buddies online but probably just as many
 groups...looks a bit silly with a group-buddy-group-buddy thing happening.

 I guess I'm shooting for a minimalist look :-)
