Me too. I was using the List Handler plugin. I don't know if that has
anything to do with it. I've tried everything, even upgraded to 2.4.1.
Workaround is to double click a contact --> click Conversation in the menu
--> More --> "Add Buddy". This sends a buddy request to your contact who
needs to approve it and then they will appear as a normal contact in your
buddy list again.
