 Yes, that looks much better.  In VALID_CHAR, should:
   `(quote || *(ptr) != ' ') && *(ptr) != '>'`
 be instead:
   `(quote || (*(ptr) != ' ' && *(ptr) != '>'))`
 to allow for > characters inside quoted attributes?

 Yeah, I'm in COPYRIGHT already.
