New description:

 I am running Pidgin 2.5.2 on Ubuntu 8.10.  Everytime I open up a window to
 start chatting with my friend, Pidgin crashes.  It's either right after
 the window comes up, or after I type the first message.  The window goes
 dark and I have to force quit.

 I can receive messages, and even accept file transfers.  It just seems to
 crash when I message.  This is a new problem, I used to be able to use
 Pidgin fully.  this started about a week ago.

 I've already apt-get remove --purge it, and reinstalled it.  I tried to
