 I am using Fedora 10. The Fedora build of Pidgin I am using is the most
 recent, 2.5.5-1.fc10. There is no debug output; the program loops forever
 (verified using gdb).

 Attached is a (length, unwieldy) backtrace during the infinite looping. As
 far as I can tell, the constant point during the looping is function #17
 in the backtrace, IA__gtk_text_layout_get_line_display.
