Comment:

 This *can't* be made application independent as we need to depend on the
 applications to tell us about the networking changes. We currently support
 using Network Manager for this, if you want us to support wicd you are
 welcome to submit a patch for that. The last comment of #181 indicates
 that while the specific patch wasn't accepted the same change was made.
