Comment(by nerddtvg):
I see what scurrilous saw with the DNS strings, however my Yahoo client
doesn't lookup these hosts. It instead does the following:
Lookup A record for vcs1.msg.yahoo.com (68.180.216.31)
Sends HTTP request to IP:
GET /capacity HTTP/1.1
Cache-Control: no-cache
Host: vcs1.msg.yahoo.com
User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0
Connection: Close
Response:
HTTP/1.1 200 OK
Content-Length: 46
Content-Type: text/plain; charset=utf-8
Cache-Control: max-age=0, must-revalidate
Expires: Sun, 10 Jun 2007 12:01:01 GMT
COLO_CAPACITY=1
CS_IP_ADDRESS=68.180.217.30
Then it connects to 68.180.217.30:5050 for paging. The rDNS comes back as
cs125.msg.sp1.yahoo.com. which seems to follow a similar pattern as the
lookups Pidgin does.
I'm not an expert in the protocols here, so I'm just guessing. I compared
with Pidgin does with the IP it looks up for the paging server and saw the
same results as with the connections Yahoo made. It seems that Yahoo has
changed their protocols a bit. Hope this helps.
