 I've did the same thing (removing the buddy alias/nickname) to all my
 contacts and now, some are showing their emails and others are showing
 their correct nickname.
 I've restarted pidgin and those buddies kept showing with the emails as
 their nicknames.

 Then I did "right-click"->"Get Info" on those and now I can remove their
 alias and restart pidgin that they'll keep their correct alias/nickname.
 :)

 That might help localizing the problem :)
